Intentional Living

Welcome to The Flourishing Retiree, where we stop asking "What now?" and start asking "Who am I becoming?" If that resonates with you, you're in the right place.

Our Story
Let’s clear something up: Retirement isn’t a never-ending vacation with bottomless brunch. For many of us—especially those who’ve spent decades leading, fixing, thinking, and serving others—retirement isn’t an ending. It’s a pivot. A wide-open invitation to redesign our days with deeper purpose, stronger connections, and a whole new kind of vitality.
That’s why The Flourishing Retiree was created—not to help you stretch your savings (plenty of experts already do that), but to stretch your sense of self. Because while the financial bucket of retirement keeps the lights on, it’s the existential bucket that keeps your soul lit. And that’s where we come in.
The Shift That Sparked a Movement
After retiring from a long career in education and consulting, I (Steve Sandoval, founder of The Flourishing Retiree) found myself asking: I’ve planned for retirement… but have I planned for the rest of my life? That question lit a fire. I realized that while most financial plans are laser-focused on money, almost no one was helping retirees plan for meaning, peace, identity, or joy.
So I created the Existential Vitality Index™ (EVI)—a practical, no-nonsense tool that helps retirees take stock of what really matters across four foundational domains:
-
Active Health
-
Relational Health
-
Spiritual Health
-
Restful Health
Each domain is broken down into real-life subdomains like energy, purpose, belonging, and rejuvenation. It’s not philosophy for philosophy’s sake. It’s a reality check that leads to meaningful change.

Our Services
Starting with EVI: Your Existential Vitality Index™
Most retirement tools measure your portfolio. This one measures your personal vitality in retirement. The EVI is a practical, eye-opening self-assessment that helps retirees and soon-to-be retirees understand how well they're doing in the areas that really matter after the paycheck stops.

Take the EVI
The EVI evaluates your current level of existential well-being across four areas or domains: Active Health, Relational Health, Spiritual Health, and Restful Health. Taking it requires 10 minutes. It might just change how you view the next 10 years.

Get an Insight Report
Your EVI data will be analyzed by our team of data experts followed by a short, but powerful and personalized Insight Report written on your behalf.

Coaching and Consultation (optional)
It's not therapy. It's not fluff. Coaching and consultation sessions are available to review your EVI results, discuss strengths and focus areas, then collaborate on a plan for future action.
Tell Me More About the Existential Areas Measured by EVI?
The Existential Vitality Index (EVI) explores key dimensions of well-being that shape a meaningful retirement. It includes a series of questions aligned to four core domains of flourishing in retirement: Active Health, Relational Health, Spiritual Health, and Restful Health.
